Samsung held the 2nd “AI Bootcamp” summer school in business data analysis

Moscow, 2019, 12 of July – An award ceremony was held at the Moscow Samsung Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC-Moscow) for students of the 2nd AI Bootcamp Summer School. Two weeks of expertise transmission in gaining insight into business data were offered by the Samsung Research Russia to students from top Russian Universities. In total, 16 scholars from the Higher School of Economics (HSE) and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) were invited to participate, suite to an open selective competition: in order to participate one had to submit an application and pass a test, showing knowledge in mathematics, logic and programming.

In this rendering of the summer school, students were offered a crash course into the data-analyst profession, as well as an opportunity to learn how to work with business data and to gain insight into contemporary marketing, which actively leverages machine learning. A syllabus of lectures and seminars, aimed at baccalaureate and magister students of IT backgrounds, was developed and implemented by Dr. Nikolay Merkulov, Head of the Data Analytics Part of the Business Innovation Lab at Samsung Research Russia. The course comprised additional lectures in biometric applications, computer vision, management of research projects – offered by Samsung Research employees, introducing the group of students to some of the challenges lying ahead of one of the world’s largest companies.

The programme concluded with project presentations – individual tasks requiring students to appropriate the language of marketing and sales, implement their own methodology of data analysis, then interpret, visualize and validate results. At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Jaehwi Jang, Head of Strategy Team of Samsung Research Russia, delivered a certificate to graduates, praising their high motivation and potential.

Samsung strives to develop the educational infrastructure of machine learning, and for this Samsung Research Russia is investing it’s expertise in free educational online courses: a first one in «Neural Networks in Computer Vision» has reached 11.000 students just 2 month after release.

The first «AI Bootcamp» Summer School was organized by Samsung in 2018, where students learned the main aspects of building neural networks under the guidance of specialists of the SAIC-Moscow, acquainted themselves with some approaches to solving non-trivial computer vision problems: segmentation, localization, and obtaining super-resolution of raster images. The company plans to continue to hold summer schools for students on a full-time basis.
