Kotlin for Android Bootcamp 2021 online school for young developers was held by Samsung

As part of the global Samsung Innovation Campus project, Samsung held an online Bootcamp 2021: Kotlin for Android for graduates of the Samsung IT School and Samsung IT Academy social and educational programs. Between July 15 and August 10, the young developers attended a course of 29 video lectures and developed mobile application projects.

The educational initiative for talented developers involved 280 participants from 22 cities, of whom 166 successfully completed the tests and were awarded with Samsung certificates.

The teachers of the «Samsung IT School» and «Samsung IT Academy» programs from Moscow: Dmitry Egorov, Vladimir Ilyin, Mikhail Portnov, Alexey Shvedchikov and Evgeny Mityakov were the teachers and jury members evaluating the projects of the Bootcamp 2021 participants, as well as teachers from other cities Druzhinskaya Elena (Ufa), Levin Mikhail (St. Petersburg), Shperling Vladimir (Novosibirsk), Yatsenko Dmitry (Rostov-on-Don), Ivanova Lidia (Tomsk), Nepretimov Alexander (Mikhailovsk), Petrushin Ivan (Irkutsk). As well as the specialists from the Samsung R&D Institute Russia: Limasov Andrey, Skripkin Andrey and Klyuev Alexey.

At the end of the course 10 teams were chosen to present their projects. The jury announced the winners of Bootcamp 2021: Kotlin for Android:

1st place — DeepSpace app, a team of Samsung IT School alumni: Yana Gladkikh (site at Voronezh State University, graduated in 2020), Vladimir Abubakirov (PFUR, Moscow, 2020), Samuel Nalysin (FML №239, St. Petersburg, 2016), Denis Shaikhlbarin (Lyceum №83, Ufa, 2020), Danil Khairulin (IT Lyceum KFU, Kazan, 2019). This app for space enthusiasts allows you to find out the location of planets and the ISS in real time using the «Space Navigator», as well as keep up with the news about space and publish your own content.

2nd place — Converta app, by Igor Yefimov (2021 Tomsk Hobby Center graduate). The app helps people with special needs communicate in 80 languages, using Talk and Listen modes.

3rd place — StoryTeller application, development team: Gleb Pavlyuk, Mikhail Mavrikiy, Kirill Dynnik, Georgy Anokhin (graduates of Samsung IT School 2021 at MIFI Lyceum). StoryTeller is a social service designed to share stories from life. Each story can be read, commented on and marked with a «like».

Third place: ASK: Audio Station Kit application by Arseniy Lyskov (graduate of Samsung IT School at Novosibirsk State Technical University Engineering Lyceum, 2021). This project is implemented in the modern Upcycling ideology: it allows to turn a used smartphone into a station that can control music, sound volume, timer and alarm clock by voice commands.

Award «Best speaker» to the best lecturer of the Bootcamp 2021, according to the voting results of the participants, was given to Lidia Ivanova, a teacher of the Samsung IT School at the Tomsk Hobby-center, under whose guidance the Grand prix winner of the contest «IT School Chooses the Strongest — 2021» Igor Yefimov developed his application. Lidia Ivanova’s lecture «Coroutines in Kotlin» got 44% of the votes of the online school students.

A striking example of such support is the annual Samsung Bootcamp summer school, where the best teachers and IT experts share the most relevant knowledge,» said Sergey Pevnev, Director of Corporate Projects at Samsung Electronics Headquarters in the CIS.

«Samsung IT School» is focused on acquisition of knowledge and practical skills in programming by pupils of 9-10 grades, having inclination towards algorithmic thinking, keen on IT technologies and having stable knowledge of school Computer Science and Mathematics course. Students in the Samsung IT School program learn how to develop mobile applications in the Java programming language for the Android platform. School students decide on their future profession and realize their potential in the field of Information Technology, a key area of the country’s economic development. Applications for the 2021/22 school year are now open on the program’s website.

In December 2019, the Samsung IT School won the «Leaders of Corporate Philanthropy in the Paradigm of Sustainable Development 2019» as the best corporate social investment program in the territories in its connection with business strategy and in the context of sustainable development. In addition, the educational program was awarded the «Runet Prize» in the category «Science and Education» in 2016.

«Samsung IT Academy,» a long-term educational project of Samsung for the development of the Digital Economy in Russia, provides university students with the opportunity to gain practical knowledge in the most in-demand areas of Information Technology. The project includes three study tracks: Internet of Things (since 2017), Artificial Intelligence and Mobile Development (both since 2019). The unique courses of the Samsung IT Academy program were developed by Samsung Research Russia specialists: Samsung R&D Institute and Samsung AI Center - Moscow.

To date, «Samsung IT Academy» program classes have been established at 21 universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Kazan, Voronezh, Ufa, Rostov-on-Don, Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Sterlitamak, Yakutsk and others. In 2021 the educational project was launched in Izhevsk State Technical University named after M.T. Kalashnikov, Bashkir State University, and National Research University MPEI. Also in July, «Samsung IT Academy» and RTU MIREA signed an agreement to continue cooperation and agreed on training plans for the Digital Economy of the Russian Federation in the framework of the «Samsung IT Academy» project. Also this year, the educational track on the Internet of Things was piloted at the Letovo school (Moscow) and was successfully completed by three schoolchildren who made prototype projects.

In September 2020 the educational program «Samsung IT Academy» was awarded the prize «The Best Social Projects of Russia».

The «Samsung IT School» and «Samsung IT Academy» projects are implemented as part of the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC), a global social and educational program launched as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiative Enabling People. The program is aimed at young people between the ages of 18 and 25, and promotes the acquisition of knowledge and professional skills in the IT sphere. Russia was the first country in the world to launch SIC projects.
