Deep | Bayes Summer School supported by Samsung was held in Moscow

The Third Summer School on Bayesian Methods in Deep Learning (Deep | Bayes Summer School) was held with the support of Samsung Electronics and the Higher School of Economics. It was attended by graduate and post-graduate students who use machine learning in various applied fields (physics, medicine, economics, etc.), as well as specialists involved in applied data analysis tasks.

The main theme of the summer school is neuro-Bayesian methods, the field of data analysis at the junction of two successful paradigms — deep learning and Bayesian methods. In the classes, students of the Deep | Bayes summer school learned how to create more effective methods for recognizing and generating images, modeling text, analyzing economic data, etc. The methods studied at the summer school are important for understanding modern scientific articles on machine learning. 

The lecturers and seminarians of the summer school were employees of the HSE, Samsung Research Center, Moscow State University M.V. Lomonosov and Skoltech. In addition, invited specialists from leading global research centers visited the school.

As part of the summer school, participants from different countries, including, Russia, the USA, the Netherlands, Germany, India, China and Japan, got acquainted with the intricacies of neuro-Bayesian methods. All of them passed a serious selection, including tests and a motivational letter.

Besides it, such events increase the prestige and prominence of Russian science in the field of AI technologies”, commented the head of the summer school, the head of the Machine Learning lab at SAIC Russia, prof. Dmitry Vetrov.

Samsung AI Center - Moscow was opened on May 29, 2018. It was the latest addition to Samsung Research, a consumer electronics research division of Samsung Electronics. The activities of the Samsung AI Center in Moscow are aimed at strengthening the company’s leadership in machine learning and data analysis, as well as exploring the wide possibilities of user-oriented AI. The main areas of study are computer vision and basic algorithms for the artificial intelligence platform. To date, seven Samsung Artificial Intelligence Centers operate under the leadership of the company: in Seoul, Silicon Valley, New York, Cambridge, Moscow, Toronto and Montreal.

In addition to Samsung AI Center in Moscow, research is being conducted in joint laboratories with leading Russian universities. Currently, such joint artificial intelligence laboratories have been created at Moscow State University, HSE and POMI RAS.

Samsung Electronics is also actively training future staff for the IT industry. With the active support of Samsung R&D Institute Russia, federal social and educational programs “SAMSUNG IT SCHOOL” (since 2014) and “Samsung IT Academy” (since 2017) are being developed, implemented by Samsung Research Center in conjunction with Samsung Electronics CIS. In 27 Russian cities, thousands of students and schoolchildren had the opportunity to undergo free training on the most popular IT courses. Successful experience in implementing programs is replicated in the CIS countries.
